What is an ebook?

ebook; e-book (ē-ˌbu̇k\) n.

1. a version of a literary work that is rendered, stored, distributed and read in digital form. Contrasted with a printed book.
2. an electronic device whose sole or principal function is to display books in digital form.

To avoid confusion, in Help Centre articles we will refer to the electronic device as an ebook reader device and the literary work as an ebook (or ebook file).

An ebook is an electronic copy of a book. You can start reading an ebook as soon as you’ve paid for it, so there is no waiting for delivery. Ebooks also offer the convenience of size and portability; you can store your entire library on a laptop or other device.

Ebooks come in different formats and each format has its own features. The ebooks available on e-livres.org are not always available in every format, so please check the product page to check the available formats for that particular ebook. But the three formats we currently offer are our Online Reader, PDF and EPUB. For more information about the differences between these formats please check our formats guide.

Ebooks can be read online in your browser, requiring no extra software. But in order to download an ebook, you need to download a small piece of free software known as an ebook reader. The particular software you need depends on the type of device you would like to read on (for instance a hand held device or on your computer).  For advice on selecting the appropriate reader, check our device guide.

Copyright Restrictions

The ebooks available from e-livres.org are almost exclusively from major publishing houses who have legal obligations to their authors. These obligations in turn mean that there are limits on the ways that ebooks can be distributed and used.

Territorial Availability

Some books are not allowed to be sold in certain places. This is almost always because the publisher who supplied the ebook to us only has a right to sell that book in clearly defined geographical territories. So you might find that the ebook you want to buy isn’t available in your country as an ebook. There will be another local publisher who holds the right to publish in your country, and it’s likely that your local publisher hasn’t released it as an ebook.

This is common with consumer book categories like fiction, biography, personal growth, etc. Scholarly, technical and professional books tend to be published globally by a single publisher.

Printing and Copy & Paste

As a rule, it isn’t possible to print the whole of a book in a single sitting. There are printing and copying restrictions placed on most commercially distributed ebooks. This is called Digital Rights Management, or simply DRM.

It’s the publisher of a book who determines how much of an ebook (if any) you can print or copy & paste. Some publishers are very liberal in this and enable you to print the whole ebook, while others are the reverse and allow no printing or copying. In general, a reasonable amount of printing and copying are enabled by most publishers.

Key information about every ebook that’s available from e-livres.org (like printing and copying permissions) is shown on the prdouct page for each ebook. At the bottom of the product page below the ‘Add to Cart’ button is a link titled “Print & copy permissions”. Please click this link and check the table before buying an ebook, to make sure the format suits your needs.

We love books. Whether in digital or paper form, we believe that books are a fundamental part of our cultural, entertainment and educational lives. Buying an ebook

Buying an ebook on e-livres.org is very straightforward and can be achieved on either our mobile website (on mobile devices and through our Ebook Reader app) or our full website.

First use the search bar to find the ebook you wish to buy, or you can browse through the categories if you need some inspiration.

From the search results or whilst browsing a section, once you have found an ebook you are interested in, select the cover image or title of the ebook. This will take you to the product page where you can read some more about the book, view the price, the formats available, the print & copy permissions and all other information about the ebook.

Once you have decided to purchase the book, select “Add to Cart” to add the book to your shopping cart. You can then continue shopping, or proceed to the checkout.

At the checkout you will see the contents of your cart, the amount of ebooks you will be purchasing and the total cost of the order before any applicable tax (tax is calculated at the next step in the checkout process). If you want to proceed select “Review Order & Checkout”. You will then be asked to log in to your e-livres.org account, or to register an account if you do not already have an account. There is also an option to checkout as a guest (you can then create an account later on).

Then, you will be asked if you want to pay via credit card or PayPal. At the following step you have the opportunity to enter a discount voucher or gift certificate code if you have one. You are then asked to enter your credit card details (or log in to PayPal if you selected that option).

You finalise the purchase by selecting “Process Order”. This will take the payment and then shown you confirmation that the purchase has taken place successfully. It is on this confirmation screen that you will be prompted to start reading your ebook straight away. For further help on this please see Reading your ebook.

If you want to make a bulk purchase of multiple copies of the same ebook please see Making a bulk purchase.

If you are making a bulk purchase for a classroom, or group of students, we also have a product that’s been designed to manage classrooms and courses. To find out more information and to see if you’re eligible, see our Ebook Course Management page.

If you can’t find the help that you need please contact our support team.

Cookies

Our site uses cookies to keep track of your visits to our website. A cookie is a small file that can be stored by your browser on your computer’s hard drive. We may use these to do a number of things:

  • We use cookies to deliver content specific to your interest and to save your password so that you don’t have to re-enter it every time you visit our site.
  • Cookies help us to recognise when you next visit our website and note the recommendations displayed to you. This allows us to tailor the service we provide to your preferences.

You can usually change your browser so that it will not accept cookies. If you’d like to learn more about cookies in general and how to manage them, visit www.aboutcookies.org

What Are Cookies?

e-livres.org places tiny text files called cookies onto your computer, tablet or mobile device. This is standard practice for almost all websites.

Cookies are not harmful to your computer and are an essential part of online shopping. They allow us to give you a more efficient customer experience.

What Are Cookies Used For?

There are two main types of cookie; we call them “first party” and “third party” cookies.

First party cookies are small data files that we use for things such as keeping track of what you’ve put in your basket and remembering who you are when you return to our site. We don’t save personal information such as credit card details in the cookies we create.

Third party cookies are set on our behalf. The most important of these are Google and Commission Junction, who display text or banner adverts on our behalf on a number of other reputable websites or in Internet search results. Commission Junction does not collect personal data from our website. Because our website uses Google Analytics to help us optimise our web pages and better understand the website’s traffic, if you visit us while you’re logged in to your Google account (like Gmail, for example) then some of your browsing activity on our site may be …

Cookies enable us to meet our contractual obligations to make payments to third parties (like Google and Commission Junction) when a product is purchased by someone who has visited our website from a site operated by those parties.

Refund Policy

To submit a refund request, please contact our help desk. It’s OK, we’re very reasonable.

An ebook you purchase from e-livres.org is eligible for return if we receive your request within seven days of the date of purchase, and you have read less than 10 per cent of the book. We will issue you a store credit, or process a full refund to your card or PayPal account – whatever your preference.

If an ebook does not perform as described by us, you may return it at any time under these rules:

Return of eBook for no reason

You can do this within 7 days of purchase if you’ve read less than 10 per cent of the book. We’ll issue a store credit or refund.

Return of ebook for a valid reason

Up to 365 days

We will issue a store credit or process a refund, if possible. (If too much time has passed, PayPal or your card issuer may not allow a refund. The window for processing refunds varies from one provider to another; it can be weeks or months. In such cases we will provide you a store credit.)

After a year

It is unlikely that we would do this. Whether or not we process a refund after such a long time is entirely at our discretion, and will be determined on the merits of the case. If we grant a refund in such a case it will only be in the form of a gift certificate that can be redeemed for purchases at www.e-livres.org.

What is a “valid reason” for returning an ebook?

We take a commonsense approach to refund requests. What constitutes a “valid reason” can change over time, along with changes in technology, and will be determined entirely at our discretion based on the circumstances. No correspondence will be entered into regarding such determination.

“I didn’t enjoy the book” is not a valid reason.

Technical problems

“The ebook didn’t meet my technical expectations” can be a valid reason for refund if the product falls short of its description. If an ebook you buy from us does not match its description in some respect, then we will process a full refund without hesitation.

On every product page on our website the ebook you’re buying is fully described.

Among other things, the description includes:

  • The ebook’s file format(s)
  • Restrictions on copying, printing, sharing, etc, if any
  • Requirements for installing additional software or apps, if necessary
  • Supported reading devices and operating systems
  • Number of pages

The description displayed on each ebook’s product page on e-livres.org constitutes our entire representation as to that product’s characteristics and functionality.

Technology changes over time. We currently support over 20,000 different reading devices. If you find that an ebook you bought in the past does not suit your needs today because of changes in technology outside our control (for example, because you bought a new device that does not support our file formats, or because the manufacturer’s firmware upgrade renders the ebook unusable on that particular device), you are not entitled to a refund.

Remember, every ebook offered for sale on e-livres.org can be read on any device that has a web browser.

Non-Technical Problems

There’s a variety of real-world issues that can trigger a refund. Just contact our support team and they’ll be glad to help. For example, if you bought an ebook for a course but then changed courses, or the instructor changed the recommended text, let us know and we’ll fix that – provided you haven’t read more than 10 per cent of the book.

Vouchers and Gift Certificates

Vouchers are sold on a firm sale, non-returnable basis. If you buy a batch of vouchers, you are not entitled to a refund for un-redeemed vouchers. This is because, having sold you a voucher or batch of vouchers for a specific title, we then pay the publisher(s) of the ebooks for the whole batch, on a firm sale, non-returnable basis.

You can return a gift certificate on the same terms as any ebook (as above), provided that the gift certificate has not been redeemed.

Abuse

These rules are really only designed to prevent abuse, which sometimes happens. We are reasonable, and are keen to help reasonable people who act reasonably.

We monitor returns and refund requests in order to prevent abuse. The ability to buy more ebooks from e-livres.org will be withdrawn if, in our sole judgment, we have reasonable grounds to believe the user is abusing the system.

When we process a refund for an ebook, we’ll disable your access to the ebook (delete it from your online bookshelf).

Re-Downloading

If an ebook becomes corrupted or requires replacement during the normal course of use, you can re-download anytime from your e-livres.org account.
