Gary B. Nash is Professor of History at the University of California at Los Angeles and
Director of the National Center for History in the Schools. He is author of Red, White,
and Black: The Peoples of Early North America, Fourth Edition (Prentice-Hall, 2000) and Forging
Freedom: The Formation of Philadelphia’s Black Community, 1720–1840 (Harvard University Press, 1988),
among other publications. Nash served as president of the Organization of American Historians in
1994–1995 and is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the
American Philosophical Society.
